Information on admission.

For admission to the Moscow School of New Cinema, you must fill out
a questionnaire and take an entrance test in chosen laboratory.

The final stage of the introductory tests is an interview (the date
and time are reported individually).

Applicants who successfully passed the competition conclude an agreement and provide the following documents to the studying department:

  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the diploma / document of education (if available)
  • 2 color photographs (3 × 4 format)

1. Autobiographical essay written in creative form

2. Description of the event or incident that affected the applicant
(only real, unfabled stories)

3. The concept of full-length or short feature film
(a description of the film, characters, atmosphere, processes)

4. Film scene, which is analyzed in detail
(description, characters, atmosphere)
not more than one page
5. Review of favorite movie of the entrant
not more than one page
6. The photo of the applicant, made by himself/herself
(free form – «How does the applicant see himself/herself?»)
7. In addition, you can provide creative work:
Photos made by the applicant (not more than nine, the subject –
«Hidden Beauty») / a movie or a video shot by an applicant

The Laboratory of Directing and Cinematography of Fred Kelemen

Assignments for admission:

1. Autobiographical essay written in a creative way
not more than one page
2. Description of an occurrence, an event from life which had a moving
impact to the entrant (fictional story is not possible)
not more than two pages
3. Conception of a long or short feature film (description of the film, characters, atmosphere, processes)
not more than one page
4. One scene of this imagined film (see paragraph 3) elaborated in detail
not more than one page
5. A review on one of the entrant's favourite movies
not more than one page
6. Photographs taken by the entrant (not more than 9) related
to the topic «Moments of an unnoticed world»
7. One film / video of any subject and genre and length shot by the entrant as a director or cinematographer
8. One selfie of the entrant (a photo of the entrant shot by him/her self)
9. Interview (after passing the contest entrants are invited for an interview - each entrant will be informed separately of the time of his or her interview)

Laboratory of cinematography

Assignments for admission:

1. Autobiographical essay written in creative form
not more than three pages
2. Six video files: Three video should be shot on location, and three
should be interior shooting. All video files must have a common
atmosphere and mood. Each video should be a montage phrase.
In each video there should be a change in the size
(master shot, midshot and close-up)
the duration of each video is at least 1 minute
3. To invent, remove and combine (by sense, emotionally and montage)
four classical compositions:
Wide shot - midshot - close-up – detail
In the absence of experience using the video editing programs,
you can provide 4 separate videos, which aren’t completed).
In this case, you need to shoot each video in a precisely verified
duration. Shoots which are made by the phone are allowed.

4. Choose any Japanese poem «hokku» (as an epigraph)
and to bring it to screen

3. Synopsis of the future script
not more than one page
4. An extract from the future script. Action must represent a complete
history, to develop in the present tense, no scenes from the past
or the future, no offscreen voice or inscriptions, a minimum of dialogues
(Please write only that which can be removed.
The volume shouldn’t be more than five pages)
